As Crusaders will lock horns with Jaguares in the final of the 2019 Super Rugby season, here is a statistical preview on the high-intensity clash that will be played at Orangetheory Stadium on Saturday.

Both the teams have topped their respective conference with Crusaders scoring 565 points in the season and Jaguares with 521 points. Crusaders have scored 81 tries in the tournament as compared to Jaguares with 67 touchdowns.

This will also be the third time these two teams will face each other in the history of Super Rugby with Crusaders winning the other two games.

Jaguares will face an uphill task on Saturday as they will be up against Crusaders, who have not lost a game at home soil in the last 30 Super Rugby matches.

This will be Crusaders' 14th appearance in a Super Rugby final and they have nine out of the previous 13 games. The second best side in terms of reaching the final is Brumbies, who have made just six appearances.

This will also be Jaguares' maiden final appearance and if they win it they will join the likes of Blues (1996), Crusaders (1998), Bulls (2007) and Reds (2011) to have clinched the title on their first attempt.

Only twice in the history of the tournament, an away team went on to win the Super Rugby final - both involving Crusaders - when they defeated Brumbies in 2000 and Lions in 2017.

The Bulls and Sharks completed the line-up for Super Rugby’s playoffs in contrasting style on Saturday as the regular season concluded with two games in South Africa.

The Sharks needed a last-gasp try to edge hosts Stormers 12-9 in a dramatic finish in Cape Town and will face the Brumbies in Canberra on Saturday.

The Bulls, despite conceding a try to the visiting Lions after 16 seconds, put together one of their best performances of the campaign to beat their neighbours 48-27 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria and book a Saturday meeting at the Wellington Hurricanes.

The two-time defending champion Crusaders will get the weekend’s play-offs underway at home to fellow New Zealand outfit the Highlanders on Friday while the Jaguares of Argentina make their first post-season appearance at home to the Waikato Chiefs later the same night.

The Bulls finished second in the South African Conference as they outscored the Lions by seven tries to two in a surprisingly expansive game but have a huge task ahead of them in the New Zealand capital.

“We will feel we have every chance after the way we’ve played in recent weeks,” said Bulls captain Handre Pollard, who contributed 18 points to remain this season’s top Super Rugby points scorer.

But the Hurricanes will head into the play-offs brimming with confidence themselves after a rousing win in their final round match.

A second-string side came back from a 19-point half-time deficit to grind down the Blues 29-24 at Wellington Regional Stadium and will return to their home ground next week for the quarter-finals.

It will be the same mood for Australian Conference winners the Brumbies, who cruised to a 40-27 win over the Queensland Reds on a cold night at Canberra Stadium, notching up six tries to secure their sixth successive win ahead of their own home quarter-final.

“I think there’s still some improvement within us so we’re pleased with how we’re performing at the moment ... hopefully we’ve got another few weeks left,” said Brumbies skipper Christian Lealiifano.

Their meeting with the enigmatic Sharks will be the first time they have faced them this season.

The Sharks were on their way out of the competition, 9-5 down at Newlands, when Lukhanyo Amn scored after the hooter had sounded.

It was the platform afterwards for beleaguered coach Robert du Preez to have a blast at home-town critics.

"The Durban press? A bunch of cockroaches," he said. "All the terrible press that this side and management team got over the last month or however long is a complete joke.”

Match Detail: Lions v Hurricanes, Sunday 9 June 1.05am, Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg

Played: 13
Won: Lions 2, Hurricanes 11
Last time: Hurricanes won 28-19h on 5 May 2018
Referee: Jaco Peyper

FORM
The back end of the regular season has been up and down for the Lions. They went on the road and lost 31-20a to the Brumbies, before beating the Chiefs 23-17a and losing to the Crusaders 36-10a. Back at home the Lions just defeated the Waratahs 29-28h and they beat the Highlanders 38-29h. In their last two rounds they lost to the Sharks 27-17a and last week they thrashed the Stormers 41-22h. They currently sit in second place in the South African conference and fifth in the overall standings. The Hurricanes have had an impressive run into the playoffs. They won five on the bounce, against the Highlanders, Sunwolves, Chiefs, Rebels and Blues. But they then lost to the Jaguares at Westpac Stadium 28-20h. Last week in South Africa they beat the Sharks 30-17. The Hurricanes are second in the New Zealand conference and one place ahead of the Lions in fourth overall.

STATS
The Lions have an impressive home record this year, having won 10 of their last 12 Super Rugby games at Ellis Park. That includes their last three games. However, the Hurricanes have won their last four away games on the bounce.

HURRICANES HIT BY INJURY AND SUSPENSION
The Hurricanes will have to make do without Vaea Fifita for three weeks after the loose forward was suspended for a dangerous tackle. Hurricanes assistant coach Carlos Spencer said before Fifita’s hearing that they were preparing for the worst and that they had had discussions about how to get around his absence. A win against the Lions would secure a home playoff for the Hurricanes. It’s not only Fifita the Hurricanes are missing this weekend. Injury has forced centre Matt Proctor, wing Wes Goosen and lock Kane Le’aupepe to return to New Zealand. Wing Salesi Rayasi, midfielder Danny Toala and lock Liam Mitchell have all joined the team in South Africa as injury replacements. Ardie Savea is having a well deserved break from starting and will come off the bench, while Gareth Evans gets the start after coming off the pine against the Sharks.

BARRETT AND PERENARA MILESTONE
Beauden Barrett and TJ Perenara will bring up a special milestone against the Lions. It will be the 100th time the pair have combined at halfback and first five-eighth for the Hurricanes, dating back to their first match together back in 2012. They have both played 123 times for the Hurricanes.

THE SCOOP
Hurricanes flanker Ardie Savea won a round-high six turnovers last weekend to take his season tally to 22, the most of any player so far in Super Rugby this year.
