As Crusaders will lock horns with Jaguares in the final of the 2019 Super Rugby season, here is a statistical preview on the high-intensity clash that will be played at Orangetheory Stadium on Saturday.

Both the teams have topped their respective conference with Crusaders scoring 565 points in the season and Jaguares with 521 points. Crusaders have scored 81 tries in the tournament as compared to Jaguares with 67 touchdowns.

This will also be the third time these two teams will face each other in the history of Super Rugby with Crusaders winning the other two games.

Jaguares will face an uphill task on Saturday as they will be up against Crusaders, who have not lost a game at home soil in the last 30 Super Rugby matches.

This will be Crusaders' 14th appearance in a Super Rugby final and they have nine out of the previous 13 games. The second best side in terms of reaching the final is Brumbies, who have made just six appearances.

This will also be Jaguares' maiden final appearance and if they win it they will join the likes of Blues (1996), Crusaders (1998), Bulls (2007) and Reds (2011) to have clinched the title on their first attempt.

Only twice in the history of the tournament, an away team went on to win the Super Rugby final - both involving Crusaders - when they defeated Brumbies in 2000 and Lions in 2017.

The Bulls and Sharks completed the line-up for Super Rugby’s playoffs in contrasting style on Saturday as the regular season concluded with two games in South Africa.

The Sharks needed a last-gasp try to edge hosts Stormers 12-9 in a dramatic finish in Cape Town and will face the Brumbies in Canberra on Saturday.

The Bulls, despite conceding a try to the visiting Lions after 16 seconds, put together one of their best performances of the campaign to beat their neighbours 48-27 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria and book a Saturday meeting at the Wellington Hurricanes.

The two-time defending champion Crusaders will get the weekend’s play-offs underway at home to fellow New Zealand outfit the Highlanders on Friday while the Jaguares of Argentina make their first post-season appearance at home to the Waikato Chiefs later the same night.

The Bulls finished second in the South African Conference as they outscored the Lions by seven tries to two in a surprisingly expansive game but have a huge task ahead of them in the New Zealand capital.

“We will feel we have every chance after the way we’ve played in recent weeks,” said Bulls captain Handre Pollard, who contributed 18 points to remain this season’s top Super Rugby points scorer.

But the Hurricanes will head into the play-offs brimming with confidence themselves after a rousing win in their final round match.

A second-string side came back from a 19-point half-time deficit to grind down the Blues 29-24 at Wellington Regional Stadium and will return to their home ground next week for the quarter-finals.

It will be the same mood for Australian Conference winners the Brumbies, who cruised to a 40-27 win over the Queensland Reds on a cold night at Canberra Stadium, notching up six tries to secure their sixth successive win ahead of their own home quarter-final.

“I think there’s still some improvement within us so we’re pleased with how we’re performing at the moment ... hopefully we’ve got another few weeks left,” said Brumbies skipper Christian Lealiifano.

Their meeting with the enigmatic Sharks will be the first time they have faced them this season.

The Sharks were on their way out of the competition, 9-5 down at Newlands, when Lukhanyo Amn scored after the hooter had sounded.

It was the platform afterwards for beleaguered coach Robert du Preez to have a blast at home-town critics.

"The Durban press? A bunch of cockroaches," he said. "All the terrible press that this side and management team got over the last month or however long is a complete joke.”

They currently sit in second place in the South African conference and fifth in the overall standings. The Hurricanes have had an impressive run into the playoffs. They won five on the bounce, against the Highlanders, Sunwolves, Chiefs, Rebels and Blues. But they then lost to the Jaguares at Westpac Stadium 28-20h. Last week in South Africa they beat the Sharks 30-17. The Hurricanes are second in the New Zealand conference and one place ahead of the Lions in fourth overall.

STATS

A win against the Lions would secure a home playoff for the Hurricanes. It’s not only Fifita the Hurricanes are missing this weekend. Injury has forced centre Matt Proctor, wing Wes Goosen and lock Kane Le’aupepe to return to New Zealand. Wing Salesi Rayasi, midfielder Danny Toala and lock Liam Mitchell have all joined the team in South Africa as injury replacements. Ardie Savea is having a well deserved break from starting and will come off the bench, while Gareth Evans gets the start after coming off the pine against the Sharks.

Beauden Barrett and TJ Perenara will bring up a special milestone against the Lions. It will be the 100th time the pair have combined at halfback and first five-eighth for the Hurricanes, dating back to their first match together back in 2012. They have both played 123 times for the Hurricanes.

Match: Highlanders vs Bulls

Competition: Super Rugby

Location: Forsyth Barr Stadium

Date: June 7, 2019

Kick-off time: 08:35 pm (UK time)

FORM
The Highlanders are coming off the back of two losses in South Africa, to the Lions 29-38 and the Stormers 22-34. They started the season with a 30-27 and 36-31 wins over the Chiefs and Reds respectively. They then went six games without a win, losing to the Rebels 19-24, the Hurricanes 22-25, the Blues 26-33, the Hurricanes 28-31 and the Crusaders 17-43 while sharing their cancelled game with the Crusaders. They then beat the Blues 24-12 and the Sunwolves 52-0, drew with the Chiefs 31-31 and beat the Jaguares 32-27. The Bulls opened their season with a 40-3 win over the Stormers. They lost to the Jaguares 12-27 but then beat the Lions 30-12 and the Sharks 37-14. They went down to the Chiefs, at home, 20-56 before beating the Sharks 19-16. They lost to the Jaguares 20-22 then beat the Reds 32-17. They lost to the Stormers 23-24 but beat the Waratahs 28-21. Then they lost to the Crusaders 13-45 before opening their Australasian tour with a 32-17 win over the Rebels, a 10-22 loss to the Brumbies and a 22-22 draw with the Blues.

WHITELOCK MILESTONE
It shapes as emotional night for the Highlanders, not only on the Super Rugby points table. Captain for the night, No.8 Luke Whitelock will play his 100th Super Rugby game, and his 50th for the Highlanders, having earlier played 50 games for the Crusaders before transferring south in 2016. He will be playing his last game at Forsyth Barr Stadium before taking up a contract with Pau in France next year. The Highlanders last regular season game is against the Waratahs next week in Invercargill. Also making his last appearance at the ground will be wing Waisake Naholo who has been named on the bench while Ben Smith's contribution to the franchise will be celebrated after the game before he also joins Whitelock in playing for Pau next year.

TOUR SUCCESS HANGS ON OUTCOME
The Bulls have named Marco van Staden at No.8 in place of the injured Paul Schoeman while halfback Embrose Papier has been recalled while Divan Rossouw and Dylan Sage have been added at fullback and centre respectively. Coach Pote Human said the success of their tour depended on achieving a win. This is going to be very tough for us, but this group thrives on challenges. I think they last lost to a team from outside New Zealand in 2016, so we need to be at our very best if we want to change that statistic." Captain Handre Pollard, recovered from his late dash to Dunedin from South Africa, said: "The short break was great and I am happy to be back. This is a great venue to play at and we are determined to make our visit a productive one. We last won here [in Dunedin] in 2007, so it is about time we change that."

THE SCOOP
The Highlanders have won their last three games against the Bulls, in spite of having led only once at halftime in those games.

FAST FACT
The Bulls have lost only two of their last six away games, including last week's 22-22 draw with the Blues.

Match details: Reds v Blues, 9.45pm Friday June 7, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.

Played: 23
Won: Reds 10, Blues 11
Drawn: 1
Last time: Blues 39, Reds 16 (29 June 2018)
Referee: Brendon Pickerill

FORM BOOK
Despite their current lowly position on the ladder, both the Blues and Reds did look like genuine playoff contenders early in the season. The Reds have lost their last four games on the bounce with their last win coming against the Sunwolves in round 12. The Blues won four games in a row early in the season before dropping five games, winning one and drawing one to slip to the bottom of the NZ conference.

BLUES PLAYOFF HOPES
There’s an endless number of permutations that can happen in Super Rugby but the equation is pretty simple for the Blues says coach Leon MacDonald. "We're only [five] points away from [eighth] and we feel like we're still in the hunt. We've definitely prepared like that this week. Our only option is to play like we can make it and let everything else take its course.”

SENSATIONAL SAMU vs MAGNICENT MA’A
Reds skipper Samu Kerevi has been a constant menace with ball in hand this year. The game-breaking midfielder has made the most carries (187), beaten the most defenders (58) and made the second most offloads of any player in Super Rugby this season. He squares off in the twelve jersey against Blues veteran Ma’a Nonu who just seems to get better with age. At 37-years-old, Nonu is just as dangerous at ever and will relish the challenge of containing the Reds main attacking weapon.

THE SCOOP
The Blues are missing two of their biggest guns in Rieko Ioane and Patrick Tuipulotu but should still have enough fire power to dispatch the Reds and keep their playoff hopes alive. Last week they were hampered by torrid conditions in Auckland but will be looking forward to a dry track and plenty of open running opportunities in Brisbane.

TEAMS
REDS: Bryce Hegarty, Jock Campbell, Chris Feauai-Sautia, Samu Kerevi, Filipo Daugunu, Matt McGahan, Scott Maloua, Scott Higginbotham, Liam Wright, Angus Scott-Young, Izack Rodda, Taniela Tupou, Alex Mafi, Jean-Pierre Smith
Reserves: Brendan Paenga-Amosa, Ruan Smith, Gavin Luka, Harry Hockings, Adam Korczyk, Moses Sorovi, Duncan Paia’aua, Hamish Stewart

The sun was blazing for the majority of the bank holiday weekend in London and those nearly 90,000 fans that came across the two days were treated to some spectacular scenes.

The rugby crowds got to appreciate a typical festival of fun in both the West Car Park and in the famed Twickenham stands – adorned with colour, and loud in voice throughout the whole weekend. The circuit now lands in Paris, and let us all hope the players survive the electric scooters that are getting some serious usage here in the French capital.
Olympics ring-fenced

There were many celebrations for a sub-plot on the sidelines over both Saturday and Sunday as the four automatic qualification slots for Tokyo 2020 have now been decided.

USA and Fiji sealed their fate by simply making the quarters, and New Zealand and South Africa joined them by way of England not progressing. This will be a welcome weight off the shoulders for these teams, and all done before the final leg – meaning a season long goal ticked off and potentially allowing serious enjoyment levels coming into the last weekend, perhaps all bar those at the very top and bottom of the standings table.
Yo-Yo podium

With Fiji winning the HSBC London Sevens it has created the sixth change at the top, pushing the South Pacific Islanders two points ahead of the omnipotent USA team, who once again gained a medal, their seventh from nine events, this time a bronze – continuing their feat of finishing in the top four in all legs this season.

It is poised to be a remarkable finish in Paris this weekend as just two points separate the two nations, and even if USA win, Fiji could still claim the title by finishing third on points difference. There will be 450 games on this series and it could all go down to the last two games.
Battle at the bottom

Wales should have secured enough points to be safe of being relegated from the HSBC World Ruby Series, as they now have a five point gap over bottom team Japan, somewhat buoyed by beating hosts England last weekend and closing the gap on Kenya by a point.

The devastation of the teams will not be pleasant viewing come Sunday evening, but shows how competitive the series is. Japan have already qualified for Tokyo as hosts, but it will be a shame to lose them from the global circuit.
England’s eye on the future

Twickenham didn’t see the best England has to offer but there was a good deal of things to celebrate. A tough pool draw with as many as seven front line players missing was never going to be easy, but a brilliant win against Scotland (with Tom Bowen’s score being a highlight), and a win against old foes New Zealand were solid achievements to be shadowed by a superior points difference by the audacious Irish, who cannot get on the Series core status quickly enough.

As the focus for England now lands on European qualifiers for the Olympics, there will be many changes to give a glimpse as to what the squad may look like post Tokyo, as the young lads with promise and potential are picked for a run out at Stade Jean-Bouin, much like I was at 19!
Silverware showdown

Aside from the coveted Series Trophy, Sunday night sees the awards roll into town honouring the DHL impact player, UL mark of excellence, Cap Gemini coach of the year and the World Rugby rookie as well as player of the year.

who beat France 31-14 in the bronze final.

The final leg is next week in Paris but the top four sides - and direct Olympic qualifiers - are already assured.

Despite losing both games on Sunday, South Africa will join Fiji, the USA and New Zealand at Tokyo 2020.

England still had a small chance of catching 'the Blitzboks' but were beaten 24-19 by Samoa in the Challenge Trophy quarter-finals. The hosts then beat Spain (40-21) before losing to Japan (29-14) in the 13th-place play-off.

England can still secure Great Britain a place at Tokyo 2020 via a European qualifying tournament in July.

Wales beat Japan 17-0 in the Challenge Trophy quarter-finals to ease their relegation fears while Scotland overcame Kenya (29-21) and Wales (33-7) to reach the Challenge Trophy final, where they lost 26-17 to Samoa.

Ireland upset the hosts on Saturday by beating them in Pool C and despite losing 33-24 to Fiji in Sunday's Cup quarter-finals, they beat Canada (33-14) before losing to New Zealand (35-14) in the fifth-place play-off.

Watch Bulls vs Queensland Reds Super Rugby Live Streaming Free Online at AEDT at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Super Rugby 13 April 2019, Saturday, Kick-off: 01:15 AEST Welcome to watch Super Rugby live stream online on your pc/laptop, mac, ipad. The St George Queensland Reds will kick of their South African Tour by travelling to Pretoria to take on the Bulls.  Both teams have had a similar start to the season and both will be hungry for a win to begin to consolidate a patchy start to the season.  So who has got the edge?

FORM
The Reds started the season full of vim and vigor but failed to notch any early wins from the first 3 matches.  Since then though, they have gone on to win 3 of their last 4 matches and head to South Africa with their fate well and truly in their own hands.  They are 4th in the comp for clean breaks and 2nd for defenders beaten but much of this is off the back of their fearless captain Samu Kerevi.  Converting his impact into tries is the piece of the puzzle that has consistently eluded the Queenslanders.  Their much vaunted scrum from last year has stuttered a little at times this season but with the Smith twins and Brendan Paenga-Amosa starting last week, it looked a lot stronger again.

The Bulls have had a reasonable start to the season and find themselves second in a very tight conference.  They only have one win more than the Reds though so there may not be a lot between the two teams.  Their attack has been fairly pedestrian so far and they sit almost at the bottom of the ladder in terms of most attacking metrics.  Scoring on average 1.8 tries per game they are winning matches off the back of their defence conceding the lowest amount of points of any team in the competition to date..

THE REDS
The Reds have made a few changes to the team that beat the Stormers last week but the majority of the team has remained the same.  In the front row Taniela Tupou is starting with Ruan Smith moving back to the bench.  The rotation of the two hookers means that Mafi gets the starting jersey and Reds leading try scorer, Paenga-Amosa will come on later in the match to surely bag some more meat pies.  In the backs, Sefa Naivalu is being rested but the Reds welcome back Chris Feauai-Sautia to outside centre in his place.  Lastly, a broken arm to Daugunu gives Aidan Toua his first start this year.  Angus Scott-Young returns from injury to take a spot on the bench and new Reds recruit Jock Campbell fills out the 23 for what will be a debut if he makes it on the field.

THE BULLS
The Bulls have made a host of changes to the team that gave up a 10 point lead with 10 minutes to go and lost to the Jaguares last week.  I’ll try and sum them up as best I can so stick with me.  The only change in the front row is a straight swap of the starting and reserve hookers from last week with Visagie getting the number 2 jersey this round.  Liebenberg moves from the second row to the back row, swapping with Kirsten who moves into the middle of the scrum.  Van Staden comes in to the back row to replace injured Steenkamp (Jaw) while Schoeman starts at 8 with this seasons turnover king Vermulen being rested as part of the Springboks World Cup protocols.  Out in the backs, the two scrum halves swap roles with Van Zyl starting and Papier to the bench.  The two test stars Handre Pollard and Jesse Kriel come back into the team which means Libbok drops back to the bench and Dylan Sage finds himself out of the 23 altogether.  At fullback the Bulls welcome back Gelant from injury to round out the team.

KEY TALKING POINTS
Attack or Defence?  Which will reign supreme? – As I alluded to above, we have a one of the best defending sides coming up against a team that has had a lot of success carrying the ball, busting tackles and beating defenders.  The Reds haven’t been able to turn attack stats into as many points as they’d like though so they will be hoping this weekend will be the match where it all clicks.  The Bulls may just surprise though, with Pollard, Kriel and Gelant back in the squad, will they buck the trend and try and beat the Reds at their own game?

The “Handre Pollard” Bulls? – I’ve banged on a bit now about the Bulls inability to score points.  Well that doesn’t apply to their star flyhalf, Handre Pollard.  Pollard has a personal haul of 96 points, the highest in the competition.  Well clear of Damian McKenzie in second place on 77 points.  This is clearly an impressive stat but when you compare this to the Bulls total team points scored (178) you begin to get an understanding of just how important he is to their game.  Keep Pollard away from the posts and you go a long way to shutting them down.

FEARLESS PREDICTION
In the past 12 encounters, this match has been won by the home team.  That’s pretty telling and probably one of the main reasons that the Bulls are strong favourites.  Thanks to Opta stats though, curiously the Bulls have only won one of their last 5 matches at home against non-South African teams, despite leading at half time in four of those matches.  The Reds have won 3 of their last 4 and have shown a much improved kicking game of late which is important in Pretoria.  If the Reds can kick well and show good discipline then I think they can go a long way to grabbing a win on tour which could well be season defining and they know it.  I know what you’ll say, but I’m going to do what I normally do and tip the…

South Sydney Rabbitohs look to return to the winners circle on Saturday when they take on the New Zealand Warriors in NRL Round 5 action.

Wayne Bennett will want an immediate response from his Rabbitohs outfit when they square off against the unpredictable Warriors in the first of three games on Super Saturday.

Souths lost their first game of the season last week when they went down 13-12 to Manly at Lottoland - a performance that followed a scrappy win over the bottom-placed Titans the previous round.

After a lightning start to the season in which they toppled minor premiers the Roosters and rivals St George Illawarra, the Rabbitohs risk being dragged back into the pack if they fail to topple the Warriors on Saturday.

There’s still no sign of a Greg Inglis return for Souths, with Bennett deciding to elevate Kyle Turner into the centres, while Liam Knight returns from suspension on the bench.

Meanwhile, the Warriors returned to winning ways last week when they easily accounted for the Titans by a 26-10 scoreline.

It was a much-needed victory for the Warriors, who after a big win over Canterbury to launch the season, conceded 34 points to the Tigers and 46 to the Sea Eagles. The first month of the season is a perfect illustration of just how inconsistent the Warriors are.

Sam Lisone returns from suspension for the Warriors to strengthen their bench, replacing Ligi Sao.

Souths have been the dominant team in this match-up recently, winning eight of their last nine meetings, while the last six of those have been by a 13+ margin. The Warriors haven’t had much luck against a disciplined and structured side, and Bennett won’t allow another lacklustre display from his side. Expect Souths to bounce back strongly.

Newcastle Knights go in search of their third straight win over Manly Sea Eagles when the two teams clash in NRL Round 5 action on Saturday.

Newcastle have lost three of their first four games in 2019 but have been close to winning every one of them - can they produce a more clinical performance to take out a confident Manly side on Saturday?

Touted by many to make the finals this season, it’s been a tough start to the season for the Knights, but the good news for Nathan Brown is that his team have been in every game, and if not for a bit of back luck, they could be in a much better position after four rounds.

Indeed, all three of Newcastle’s defeats have been by a combined margin of 10 points, but whiled defence isn’t an issue for the team, attack clearly is, with the Knights failing to score more than 14 points in any game this season.

For a team blessed with the talent of Kalyn Ponga and Mitchell Pearce in their spine, that simply isn’t good enough. Ponga looked better at fullback last week, but the Knights need Pearce to step up if they are going to overcome Manly on Saturday.

The Sea Eagles endured a rough start to the season, but they are on the right track now, winning their last two games against the Warriors (a big victory where they scored 46 points) and last week against a previously-unbeaten Rabbitohs outfit, prevailing 13-12 at home.

However, Manly also suffered a big blow in that win, with star fullback Tom Trbojevic set to miss the next two months after re-injuring his hamstring.

The Sea Eagles struggled significantly with Trbojevic at the start of the season and could find the going tough without him again. But, in saying that, his brother Jake and Daly Cherry-Evans have stepped up in recent weeks and are leading from the front.

Newcastle have won the last two games between the sides, but both were close, and I can see another tight contest eventuating again on Saturday. The Knights aren’t doing much wrong, but they need a bit more spice in attack. Manly are playing tough football under Des Hasler, but the loss of Trbojevic is huge. It could be time for Newcastle to edge a confidence-boosting win to kick-start their season.

Stats

Knights have won their last two encounters
Both of those wins were by six points or less
Manly’s last win in Newcastle came in 2016
